Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC)

The First Committee of the UN General Assembly, addressing global disarmament and security challenges.

About this committee

The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), also known as the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, addresses global challenges and threats to international peace and security.

At AHPMUN, delegates will evaluate the security, humanitarian, and diplomatic dimensions of two ongoing conflicts. They will work to balance national interests with de-escalation, civilian protection, regional stability, and effective international cooperation.

Topics

Topic A: Addressing the Kashmir Conflict and Its Implications for Regional Security

Topic A will examine the Kashmir conflict and its broader consequences for security in South Asia. Delegates will consider the competing positions of India and Pakistan, the role of the Line of Control, the danger of military escalation between nuclear-armed states, and the effects of political instability on communities across the region. The committee will explore confidence-building measures, diplomatic engagement, arms control, and the role of the United Nations in supporting a peaceful and sustainable path forward.

Topic B: Responding to the Ongoing Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan

Topic B will address the continuing conflict in Sudan and its regional and humanitarian consequences. Delegates will assess the conflict involving the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, the flow of weapons, threats to civilians, displacement, barriers to humanitarian access, and the risk of instability spreading across neighboring states. The committee will debate ceasefire mechanisms, restrictions on arms transfers, protection of aid operations, regional diplomacy, and steps toward a durable political settlement.

Background guides coming soon.

Chair

Dear delegates, I am excited to serve as one of your DISEC chairs and as a Secretary-General for AHPMUN 2026. I have been part of American Heritage's Model UN team since freshman year, and competing across the country with close friends has made MUN one of the most meaningful parts of my high school experience.

At school, I am also involved in Mock Trial, Moot Court, the Pre-Law Society, and Mu Alpha Theta. Outside the classroom, I enjoy playing poker and pickleball, following Tottenham and the Montreal Canadiens, playing Football Manager, rating movies on Letterboxd, and discussing elections. Feel free to ask me for my 2026 midterm predictions.

I look forward to seeing the creativity and diplomacy each delegate brings to committee.

Hello, delegates! I am one of the Secretaries-General of AHPMUN 2026. I am excited to chair DISEC and help create a committee environment that is engaging, welcoming, and fun.

I have participated in Model UN since freshman year and am especially drawn to committees with unique structures or historical dimensions because they encourage delegates to think creatively. Last year, I served as a Co-Chair for AHPMUN 2025, and I later served as Under-Secretary-General for HUDMUN 2026.

Outside of MUN, I am President of Save the Memories, an Alzheimer's awareness club focused on education and support. I also enjoy foreign policy, history, sports, video games, spending time with friends, and matcha. I always seem to find my way into women's-rights committees, especially the Commission on the Status of Women.

I look forward to seeing your ideas and energy in debate.

Co-Chair

Hi everyone! My name is Alan Joseph, and I'm excited to be one of your co-chairs for DISEC at AHPMUN this year! I joined the Heritage Model UN team my junior year, after competing at our home conferences, AHPMUN and HUDMUN.

In school, I'm involved in DECA, Computer Science Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and playing my varsity sport. Outside of school, you'll usually find me playing basketball or pickleball, at the poker table, campaigning for the abolishment of periods, or watching sports (Heat winning the chip). I also love watching movies and shows, my favorites are probably Fight Club, Marty Supreme, HIMYM, and Black Clover.

My favorite committees are when people are not afraid to compete and passionately argue their topic, while remaining respectful. Let's make this a fun, respectful, and competitive committee, and don't be afraid to speak or reach out to us with any questions.

Co-Chair

Hi everyone! My name is Aarav, and I'm excited to be serving as one of your co-chairs for AHPMUN this year! I've been involved in Model UN throughout high school, and one of my favorite parts has always been the opportunity to debate complex global issues while collaborating with people who bring different perspectives to the table.

Outside of MUN, I'm the co-founder of Civic Conscience, a nonprofit dedicated to helping young people develop ethical decision-making skills, and I'm also the President of my school's Feeding South Florida club. I enjoy following politics, international affairs, and current events, so I'm looking forward to seeing the creative solutions and diplomacy everyone brings to committee.

When I'm not preparing for conferences, you'll usually find me playing soccer, working on new projects, hanging out with friends, or keeping up with the latest news. I can't wait to meet all of you and help make this committee engaging, competitive, and most importantly, fun. See you all in committee!
